Cheap Charlie’s: an obituary.

Bangkok. July 28, 2017.

A room with a view.

Firstly an apology. I’ve not kept this blog up to date. I have a good excuse: nothing whatsoever has happened to me since the last post. I’ve painted the gate, seen Wales draw 1-1 in Belgrade and enjoyed a fine performance of Cosi fan Tutte in Berlin but apart from that, that’s it. Nada.

Yesterday evening I was shocked to discover that Cheap Charlie’s, that firm fixture in Sukhumvit Soi 11 has ceased trading. For decades this has been a reliable provider of cheap beer and cheap conversation but apparently the land has been sold and the old place has been moved away. To landfill probably.

To be fair it was a bit of a dive. Even by Bangkok standards it was an unsanitary hole. But it had a certain charm, Beer Lao and it was always a place where random strangers could meet and discuss anything. Not everything of course.

Tomorrow I head North to Chiang Mai. I’m going to be a student again.
